Over 340 Fashion Retailers Around the World Are Banning Mohair After Seeing PETA’s Investigation

Posted on by PETA

PETA’s groundbreaking investigation of the mohair industry in South Africa—the source of more than 50 percent of the world’s mohair—has prompted Arcadia Group (which owns Topshop), H&M Group, Inditex’s apparel brands (including Zara), Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Anthropologie, Athleta, and Lacoste to ban the material—and it’s little wonder why.

PETA’s video exposé highlights just some of the horrific abuse documented on all 12 of the angora goat farms that an eyewitness visited. This video will make you leave that mohair sweater, blanket, or ball of yarn on the shelf, and you won’t be surprised as to why the world’s top fashion retailers are now choosing to ditch the material.

Over 340 top retailers have banned or have made pledges to ban mohair after seeing our video exposé. Among them are the following:

  • ascena retail group, inc., which owns Ann Taylor, Lane Bryant, Justice, and other brands, with more than 4,800 stores in North America
  • Bestseller, which owns brands including Vero Moda and Noisy May
  • Chico’s FAS, Inc., which owns Chico’s, White House Black Market, and Soma
  • Colovos
  • Daniel Cremieux
  • Destination Maternity
  • Express
  • FatFace
  • Lacoste
  • Lazy Oaf
  • Mango
  • Marks & Spencer
  • Monsoon Accessorize
  • New Era Cap Company
  • Next
  • com
  • Primark
  • Reformation
  • rue21
  • Tom Tailor Group
  • The White Company
  • VENUS

While this progress is exciting, angora goats still need your help. They are raised specifically for their mohair coats, and many die even before they would have been slaughtered. Please, won’t you help these animals?

You Can Help Stop This

The best thing that you can do for angora goats is refuse to buy mohair. It’s easy to check the label when you’re shopping. If it includes the word “mohair,” leave it on the shelf. A number of beautiful, warm, animal-friendly materials are available today—including bamboo, Tencel, acrylic, modal, rayon, and viscose—that you can choose from instead.
